An app that helps ALS patients communicate through eye-tracking

CHALLENGE

ALS is one of the most disabling diseases, leaving patients completely immobile and without the ability to speak. While assistive coomunication technologies exist, their high cost makes them inaccessible for most patients.

The challenge was to democratize communication, delivering an effective, affordable and scalable solution for people living with ALS and their caregivers.

SOLUTION

Under the Technology with Purpose platform, Samsung and Cheil Spain created Tallk, a free app that turns Samsung Galaxy tablets into an eye-tracking communication tool.

By leveraging exixting technology, Tallk translates eye movements into words and actions, enabling patients to communicate, interact with their environment and control connected home devices, restoring autonomy, dignity and a voice.

RESULTS

Tallk became a widely adopted, real-world solution:

  •     - 50% of ALS patients downloaded the app
  •     - 96% positive sentiment on Social Media
  •     - Over 1M€ in earned media value, with extensive national media coverage

  • The app increased independence and communication for ALS patients, garnered widespread media attention and strenghtened Samsung's brand reputation in accessibility and social technology, proving that meaningful innovation can deliver measurable social impact.
